On Labor Day of 2008 the earnest host of Discovery's Dirty Jobs, Mike Rowe, launched an introduction for his new site, MikeRoweWorks.com. The social-networking job site promotes trade jobs and skilled labor. As Mike Rowe puts it, “We’ve declared civil war on the traditional notion of labor… redefining our relationship with work. We need a place to celebrate it!” |

2x4, based out of Chicago, provided the mock-up for Mike's site. The site’s main page background is a construction site where many of the items, such as a tool shed, an office, a water cooler, link to blogs, job databases, information, networking, and other resources. Mike would be filmed “walking” onto the construction site where he would welcome visitors and point out the site's many features and links. This required a green screen shot and a studio that could chromakey the background behind him. |

Assessing the needs of the client, the Beyond Pix Interactive Media team (IM) created a production plan for MikeRoweWorks.com. IM enlisted the help of director of photography Sean Karlin to film Mike on Beyond Pix’s own Studio D green screen. Next, IM plotted a shooting guide for the specific dimensions of the site's design, taking into consideration large and small browser windows as well as the site's interactive features. Beyond Pix used Panasonic HVX200s, taking advantage of the P2 workflow and well-organized script supervision, Mike's takes were copied directly from the camera's card, organized by scene, and uploaded to the Beyond Pix Media Server, a feature-rich FTP that allows easy approval and note-making for clients. After 2x4 and Mike Rowe approved the best takes in Chicago, Beyond Pix copied the high-quality HD footage onto a firewire drive and shipped it via FedEx, making the turn-around for final video fast and efficient. |
